Unique, yet still very traditional are the Harrwitz Ebony and Antiqued Chess Men. As with their ebonised cousins, each Harrwitz chess piece is painstakingly turned then expertly carved from high quality woods, to create this exceptional set of luxury reproduction chess men.
The darker pieces are solid ebony and as such makes this set of chessmen something of an investment. The light pieces have been antiqued to give this unique look and stunning combination. Both sides boast a very professional finish, whilst also further protecting the wood. Without doubt, this superb set of chess men will last for many years – making for a great family heirloom, perhaps.
The King at 3.5 inches (89 mm) along all the pieces are weighted and have a base layer of felt to ensure your board is protected. These pieces will ideally sit well on a board of approx 20 inches.
As with the ebonized pieces, these ebony reproduction pieces also bear the original markings of the kings crown on 1 black knight, 1 black rook, 1 white knight and 1 white rook and, as we know, these pieces will sit on the Kings flank. This was a practical innovation to identify their position on the King’s side of the board. This is because, in descriptive chess notation, the rooks and knights were often referred to as being the ‘queens knight, or the ‘king’s rook’.
The name Harrwitz is in memory of Daniel Harrwitz born in Germany in 1821. An established chess player during his time, he was renowned for his reputation (especially in Paris) as a player of blindfold games. He competed against the likes of Howard Staunton, Adolf Anderssen and Paul Morphy during his time. He withdrew during his game with Morphy with a claim of ill health and subsequently retired. He passed away in 1884 at the age of just 62.
