The 1853 Paulsen Reproduction chess men have been named after Louis Paulsen (Jan 1833 to August 1891), who during the 1860 and 1870’s, was among the top five players in the world. Based on the traditional Staunton design, the pieces are handcrafted from solid ebony and boxwood. The king, standing at 3.5 inches tall, along with all the other pieces, are painstakingly carved and finished to perfection. The bases (quite broad for this height) are then covered with billiard cloth so that your board will not be damage during battle.
To complement these historic pieces, we would recommend looking at boards boards from 21 inches with larger squares to accommodate the broader bases. Most of the woods used in these boards will complement the ebony and boxwood pieces, no problem at all. However please feel free to contact our customer services team if you have any concerns or queries.
