Highly detailed and superbly finished, these 1849 Reproduction Staunton Chessmen, with a 4.4 inch king, are handcrafted in high quality ebony and boxwood in the form of the world famous and classic Staunton design.
Offered by the same chess workshop that produces some of the world’s finest and luxury chessmen, these stunning pieces have been turned from solid wood then painstakingly carved with their beautiful detailing.
At 4.4 inches, the king is an formidable figure with his intricate finial and double banding on his collar. He, along with his supporting army, is perfectly weighted for balance and billiard cloth covers all the chess pieces’ bases to protect your board.
You can see that the kings in this set are branded at the base with the words “Staunton 1849”. These ebony reproduction pieces also bear the original markings of the kings crown on 1 black knight, 1 black rook, 1 white knight and 1 white rook and, as we know, these pieces will sit on the Kings flank. This was a practical innovation to identify their position on the King’s side of the board. This is because, in descriptive chess notation, the rooks and knights were often referred to as being the ‘queens knight, or the ‘king’s rook’.

The high quality grade of ebony and boxwood used to create this set, makes it not only an enviable acquisition but also a fantastic investment and exciting heirloom for future generations.

For the king’s height and broad base in this set, these lovely chess men have been matched with a quality 23.6 inch (60 cm) black printed light maple chess board, produced by chess artisans Rechapados Ferrer S.A. of Spain. Using only high grade veneers in its construction and using modern fabrication techniques, this has produced a simplistic contemporary design with sharp contrasting lines and critical detailing. The jet black squares checkered with the extra light maple is simply seductive. A beautifully veneered grey wood base adds the finishing touch. Perfect for accompanying these imposing chess pieces to create a wonderfully timeless chess set.

The chess board in this set has been expertly crafted by Rechapados Ferrer in Spain using precision laser cutting techniques and stunning wooden veneers combined with expert lacquering and finishing. The underside of the board is finished in a satin veneer that is a different colour from the playing surface of the board. The veneers used for the underside may vary in colour from batch to batch.
